Don't Burn the Books!

“You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.” - Mohandas Ghandi

"Without libraries what have we? We have no past and no future." - Ray Bradbury

We finished Farenheit 451 . . . I looked up some background info on Bradbury and found articles that claimed his book was not originally intended to be a commentary on censorship but a warning about the effects television might have on books. That we could get "factoids" of information that would replace our need to read (like the "ticker" at the bottom of the news channels. . .)

When I was a kid, I spent hours in the library researching in the encyclopedia, flipping through the card catalog, etc. . . now, my kids push a few buttons. Want to know what eats jellyfish? (Turtles!) The correct words to any song? (It's 'revved up like a DEUCE, another runner in the night!') Whatever happened to Bananarama? (No, me neither. . . )

But it's more than that - we can reach out and touch others: find friends from high school, send our thoughts to Katie Couric or Bill O'Reilly, check in on what that Crazy Lara Chick is doing. . .

Today, we are off and running with our countdown to school. . .I must be off (my rocker!) Have fun!!!

And show your support for our library! Check out the forums for info on an important meeting tonight. . .
